A Detailed Tour of the Christmas Decor in Our Great Room | Thrifty Decor Chick

Our family room is usually the first room I start decorating every season, and always ends up being one of our absolute favorite rooms in the house!

It may not look like it, but I was determined to not go quite as crazy with decor as I have in years past. I wanted to tone it down a little bit, but I’m not sure it looks like it considering this is our our great room looks now:

I did hold back just a bit, even though it doesn’t look like it. 😂

This year I want to show a little more detail in my Christmas room tours…some of my favorite accents are the smallest!

I found these paper collapsible trees a Walmart and Hobby Lobby last year and still LOVE them. They store away flat, which saves so much space:

I prefer more muted decor in this room, that goes with our jewel-toned Christmas tree. I decorate very traditionally in our basement (tour coming soon!), but here I went with dark green and brown pillow covers:

Those printed pillows are some of my favorite Christmas decor finds! I got those at HomeGoods a year or two ago, but haven’t seen any similar ones since.

The remaining pillow covers are all from Amazon:

I kept most of the decor on the coffee table the same as usual, and just added a few holiday touches. The DIY gilded pomegranates are in a brass bowl:

I also switched out a candle and placed cedar greenery the vase:

I used the same burgundy touches for my fall decor, so this area was super easy to switch out!

You don’t have to replace every item for Christmas themed decor! Instead, use what you have and make small seasonal tweaks.

Our mantel is always my favorite spot to decorate. It’s where I get creative with the design year to year, while trying to use what I already have.

I use layers of greenery, berry picks and pine cones…but try to change up the look and accent colors:

This year I didn’t swag and drape the garland like I’ve done in the past — instead I laid it across the length of the mantel and then let it fall down to the floor on one side.

Usually I pile up a bunch of different greenery (different green tones and looks) to add fullness. This year I used some cedar garland I had, and then added some new, fuller cedar to the top.

When I got the fullness I wanted, I added some pine cones, sparkly gold berry picks and a few more Christmas staples:

It is full, lush and gorgeous and I LOVE how it turned out! Our tall fireplace needs a statement and this does the job:

Every single year we have friends or family that ask if it’s real. It is a stunner!

I love to update decor with spray paint, especially Christmas decor! A few years back I gave our tree decor a new look, and I still use all of these jewel-toned accents on it:

I kept most of the decor on our tall nearby bookcase the same — just a few little holiday touches:

Berries, greenery and bells go a long way to spruce up basic decor this time of year:

In recent years I’ve been displaying our garland at the bottom of the stair balusters, but this year I went with the more traditional, swagged look on the railing:

Usually I fill the garland with tons of decor, but I went with a simpler look this season. That gorgeous cedar garland doesn’t need much to dress it up!

Instead, I tucked in a few bells, berries and ribbon at a few spots along the stair railing:

It’s just enough festive decor without going crazy.

The newel post is usually decorated as well, but instead I placed our big wood nutcracker to stand guard:

The lighted greenery around the room gives a festive look without spending a ton of time decorating every little surface:

I don’t change out any of the decor on our built in bookcases, and most of the coffee table stays the same all year long:
